about

"Composed while she was still a princess, 'Ike Ia Ladana is one of Lili'uokalani's most beautiful and memorable melodies. She wrote it, as Ladana (London) suggests, about a trip to England with her sister-in-law, Queen Kapi'olani, to visit Buckingham Palace. Its lyrics praise Queen Victoria for opening her heart to the Hawaiians."
One of my biggest influences musically is pianist George Winston. I've heard his work struck down as new-agey floomf, but I think you need to live your formative years in the kinds of settings he tries to evoke to understand why his music is so stupidly resplendent in way that transcends the schmaltz.
One of his most tearjerking pieces is this random rendition off his Plains album, a cover of a Hawaiian song of thanks to the queen of England. His version is so spacious, the notes ring on for days, much like how time passes so slowly out in the country. For some reason, I took it upon myself to learn it on guitar one day, and was the first piece of music I learned that wasn't a punk song, or just more involved than just blamming out power chords. About a decade after learning it by ear, here is my rendition of a rendition, just as random as the version that slayed me as a child.
